SKOL: Coal-power industry takes hit with ash spill disaster
Monte Jacobson of West Salem hadn’t heard about the catastrophic Christmas-week coal ash spill in Kingston, Tenn., when I talked with him last week, three days after the spill. He wrote a letter to the editor last summer warning against the storage of coal ash in a proposed landfill in Vernon County, so I thought he might like to comment on the Tennessee disaster that has been compared to the Exxon Valdez spill.

DE-LIGHTFUL: Holmen’s holiday lights contest might be new this year but the winners are old pros when it comes to lighting up the neighborhood around Christmas. Richard and June Daffinson of 410 Wade Drive won the contest this year, putting up the top display with help from son Kevin and daughter and son-in-law Kelley and Chad Collins. The Daffinsons have a long history of lavish displays, winning honors in area-wide contests in the past, but they had taken a few years off from decorating until this year. Their display can be viewed through Jan. 4. As winners, the Daffinsons get a family pass to the Holmen Area Aquatic Center. For more pictures of the Daffinsons’ display, check out our photo gallery, where you also can view pictures of the winners of Onalaska’s holiday decorating contest.
