Holmen High School's powerlifting team pushed its total of state qualifiers to 23 at a last-chance meet at Whitehall Saturday.

Holmen's newest qualifiers are senior Steve Spangler, and juniors Brandon Beilke, Darrin Witt and Izzy Nygaard. State will be conducted March 9 and 10 in Necedah.

Spangler keyed a 2-3-4 finish in the boys 198-pound division with Witt and Beilke. Spangler included a deadlift of 455 pounds and a squat of 415 pounds in a total-combined lift of 1,060 pounds.

Witt matched Spangler in the squat and had 30 pounds more (220) in the bench press, but lifted 40 pounds less in the deadlift. Beilke had a deadlift of 425 and squat of 395 in matching Witt's total-combined lift of 1,050 pounds.

Nygaard qualified at 153 pounds. She had a squat of 240 pounds and deadlift of 235 in a total of 570.

Though team scores were not kept, five other Holmen lifters finished in the top four in their divisions. Tim Snyder at 275 finished first in his weight class, including a deadlift of 415 and squat of 405 in a total lift of 1,035.

Andrea Bork and Kristi Kamprud each finished second in their divisions. Bork had a deadlift of 270 and squat of 225 in a total lift of 605. Kamprud notched a deadlift of 240 and squat of 200 for a total of 545.

Kate Shefelbine finished two places behind weight-class winner Nygaard. Shefelbine had a deadlift of 240, but a squat of 215 in a total lift of 535.

Tony Haupt finished fourth at 242 pounds. The senior tallied a squat of 480 and deadlift of 360 in a total lift of 1,045 pounds.

The foursome join the HHS lifters who've already qualified, a group that includes Eric Kordus, Elizabeth Bennett, Becca Abraham, Andrew Brueggen, Annessia Xiong, Sarah Lang, Josh Olson, Kyle Warner, Dustin Stockowitz, Cory Peters, Dan Huber, Jake Nottestad, Billy Kellar, Aaron Thesing, Sam White, Kris Zachary, Ryan Fredrickson, Jenny Lehrke and Amber McDonald.

" Yeah, so if I would have been in the 142, I would have been able to qualify. Sad, but hey it's easier being a fatty :) "
