Published - Wednesday, May 14, 2008 LETTER: Meat is the biggest global threat there is Al Gore mystifies me. He works tirelessly to raise environmental awareness, yet he continues to ignore evidence that eating meat is the No. 1 cause of global warming. Making “carbon offsets” can’t counteract the damage done by the meat industry. That’s like smoking three packs a day and then making a nominal contribution to a lung-cancer charity. If we’re serious about saving the planet, it’s time to go vegan. A University of Chicago study showed that switching to a vegan diet is about 50 percent more effective in countering global warming than switching from a standard car to a Prius. The Live Earth Global Warming Survival Handbook — the companion volume to the Live Earth concerts inspired by Gore — states that “refusing meat” is “the single most effective thing you can do to reduce your carbon footprint.” Going vegan will also “offset” pollution, deforestation and other problems — not to mention help billions of animals. With all due respect to Mr. Gore, it’s time to face the “inconvenient” truth and go vegan. Please do your part: Visit www.OffsetAlGore.com for a free vegetarian starter kit.
