Holmen High School's girls soccer team played Mississippi Valley Conference contender Logan to a 1-1 tie between two halves played Monday and Tuesday. Unfortnnately for Holmen those two halves did not come in the same game. Holmen trailed 3-0 at halftime Monday on their way to a 4-1 loss, while standing tied at halftime Tuesday, before falling 3-0.

Katlyn McHenry scored the Vikings goal 17 minutes into the second half Monday, getting HHS within 3-1. Logan answered and produced the final margin eight minutes later.

Lucie Borden took a complete-game loss for Holmen, tallying nine saves, though one of the Rangers goals came on a penalty kick with two minutes to play in the first half. Logan outtotalled Holmen 13-2 in shots on goal.

The Rangers took control of Tuesday's game early in the second half, scoring all three times in a 14-minute, 40-second span. Borden took a complete-game loss, recording 11 saves in 14 chances. Holmen managed three shots on goal, from McHenry, German foreign-exchange student Tinnette Neu and Alex Wright.

The game was not played for the full 80 minutes, but was stopped and not continued due to lightning with 14 minutes to go.

The Vikings went 0-3 at Saturday's Spring Green River Valley tournament, including 4-0 losses to both Wisconsin Rapids Assumption and Sparta, but may have found a bright spot in freshman midfielder Makenzi Rasmussen. Rasmussen is the younger sister of Brooke Rasmussen.

“Makenzi was pulled up to play varsity this past weekend where she was able to get in a lot of playing time and truly prove herself as a varsity player,” HHS head coach Khyl Sircy said. “Makenzi will now be playing varsity full-time.”

Saturday's tournament game featured only 30-minutes halves in lieu of the normal 40-minute halves. Holmen hurt its chances against Assumption after trailing 2-0 at halftime, surrendering an own goal about 1 1/2 minutes in.

The Vikings won the battle of comparative scores with River Valley against Assumption (8-0 Assumption win), but HHS couldn't get its first win of the season against River Valley. Holmen opened play against River Valley.

The Vikings also may have missed their best remaining chance at a league win two days earlier in a 2-0 loss at Central. Borden had one of her better games of the season in making 18 saves in a complete-game loss, but HHS produced just three shots on goal.

Holmen showed its periods of improved play Monday and Tuesday despite battling several injuries to key players. Sydney Sua sustained a concussion against River Valley and may be back for Saturday's triangular with Sparta at Mauston.

Brittany Wright missed both Logan games with shin splints, but returned for Thursday's game with Sparta (after the Courier deadline). The Vikings, a team without consistent offensive punch, have been playing without two of their better offensive players in Ciana Beilke, who is out with a broken arm, and McKenzie Hart, who is out with a knee injury.
