Holmen High School senior Sam Schroeder, winner of the Best in Show award in the 2008 Wisconsin Junior Federal Duck Stamp Contest, was nominated for Student of the Week by art teacher Liz Schank.
“Sam’s watercolor painting went on to the national level of competition at the San Diego Zoo and will now exhibit across the United States for the next year,” said Schank, who was impressed with Schroeder “for all the hard work and long hours.”
The son of Beth and Gary Schroeder, his favorite thing about his art class is “being in a room flooded with creativity and being able to soak some of it up.” Art is one of his favorite classes, along with French.
He also is involved in National Honor Society, Snowboard/Ski Club, Art Club, Maroon Jazz Band, White Jazz Band, Renaissance Action Team, band and choir.
Sam’s favorite books are “The Count of Monte Cristo” and the “Harry Potter” series. His favorite movies are “Sweeney Todd” and “Harold and Maude.”
Schroeder said one of his quirks is his laugh. “I laughed one day and ever since then people have constantly let me know how crazy it is.”
After high school Sam plans to go to the University of Minnesota in the Twin Cities and, as he says, “major in … something, hopefully.”
His advice for other students: “Don’t concentrate entirely on school; it causes you to flunk life. Don’t concentrate entirely on life; it causes you to flunk school.” His advice is based on quotations from author Walker Percy.
