Holmen High School's No. 3 doubles team of Ethan Pedretti and Trent Bodin won both of their matches at Monday's subsectional at St. T's Tennis and Sports in Winona, advancing to Wednesday's sectional at Nielseon Tennis Stadium in Madison (after the Courier deadline).

The duo (12-6) opened with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Baraboo, before following with a 6-1, 7-6 win over Sauk Prairie. Bodin and Pedretti were seeded opposite of the Onalaska duo of Alex Axchenbrenner and Nick Klos, who handed them one of just two regular-season Mississippi Valley Conference losses five days earlier.

“The first set against Baraboo was one of the better sets they've played this year,” Holmen head coach Greg Jameson said. “They hit through the ball and served well. But they've also been playing pretty well all year, so the way they played today is nothing new.”

Vikings players came within one win of joining Bodin and Pedretti in four of the other six flights. Among those who came within one win of advancing was Isaiah Vang at No. 4 singles, who upset MVC tournament third-place finisher Alex Sanjari of Tomah, rebounding fron losing the first set to win the second set 6-1 on his way to the win.

Sanjari and Vang were playing one another for the first time this season. Vang lost his ensuing match to Sauk Prairie's Joe Breunig (11-5).

“Isaiah's play was the bright spot of the day for us,” Jameson said. “The second set against Sanjari was his best set of the season by far.

“He followed the game plan. He approached in the middle. Other than Trent and Ethan, he played our best back-to-back matches today.”

Matt Jameson at No. 2 singles followed a path similar to Vang, opening with a win over Reedsburg, before falling to Sauk Prairie's Mike Hruby (10-7). Jameson beat Hruby 6-3, 6-4 at the Viking Elementary Courts a week earlier.

“(Hruby) didn't do much with the ball,” Jameson said of his son. “He hit it will just a little bit of topspin and didn't attack much.

“But Matt got impatient at times and made a few too many errors. It was a tough way for his season to end.

“I thought we could get Matt through to sectionals, but he had issues in second matches. He didn't have a lot in the second set against (Onalaska's Christian) Handahl Thursday, either. Today he played well in the first match, but not well in the second.”

Jameson had Holmen's best finish at the MVC tournament at UW-La Crosse. He earned the top seed in the flight after taking his lone loss to Joel Reinhart of Aquinas and advanced to the final in losing just four games to Central's Nick Garvin. But Handahl earned a measure of revenge for a loss to Jameson the previous afternoon by losing just three games in the tttle match.

The Vikings No. 2 doubles team of Pheng Lee and Vue Lor also had a frustrating end to their season. The duo led Tomah's Dave Kaul and Kyle Laylan 5-0, 15-0 in the third set of their opening match, but fell 7-5.

Jameson estimated the duo were unable to convert 15 match points, including six match points on Lor's serve. The match came four days after the duo held their seed in taking fourth at the MVC tourney.

“They had let courts go against them, missed overheads, missed volleys, double faults and had mishits go against them,” Jameson said. “They found every conceivable way to lose a point at the end of that set.”

Na Xiong at No. 1 singles injured his back in his MVC tourney loss to Brett Polito, with Jameson saying the injury carried over into Monday's loss to Central's Victor Mirasola (13-3). Xiong won just three games against Polito (15-6).

“He played some good matches to end the season, but he never got over the hump,” Jameson said. “I wasn't sure he'd be able to complete the match today.”

Mike Yang at No. 3 singles lost his opening match Monday to Logan's Christian Gunderson. Cole Wittwer and Tyler Kerska at No. 1 doubles lost their opening match Monday to Logan's Evan Nelson and Andy Bonifas.
