Bernie Ferry's HHS commencement speech: Class of 2008

Today is a new start or journey for the Class of 2008.

Students who crossed the stage today represent a variety of families and cultures.

For some it could be a first generation of a family member graduating from high school and aspiring to continue their education. It could be a student who has several generations of family members who have graduated from high school and continued their education at two year schools, vocational institutions, college and universities or a military commitment.

Whatever the background and culture of the many people in the audience today, we all have several things in common:

  • We are very proud of the Class of 2008.

  • We want for them (Class of 2008) the very best as it relates to:

  • A successful career

  • A meaningful and long lasting relationship with people including their families.

  • Good health

  • And a positive attitude that always sees the cup half full not half empty. Disappointment is a part of our lives and the key is how we handle these set backs.

The famous 19th Century American writer Henry David Thoreau in his writing of “Your Journey” gives excellent advice on setting goals, overcoming disappointments, developing a passion for life and seeking happiness in life. Thoreau in his writings in “Your Journey” writes:

As you set out in search of your goals

Pray that your journey be long,

Full of adventure, full of awakenings,

Do not fear failure n it will be there!

If your thoughts are honorable and remain high,

If authentic passion stirs your mind, body and spirit,

It will sustain you in your journey.

Advance confidently in the direction of your dream,

And endeavor to live the life which you have imagined

And you will meet with happiness and success that is unexpected in common times.

The Class of 2008 has started their journey on a path of success. Their legacy of excellence has been planted in the hallways of Holmen High School. We are a better school and community because of the Class of 2008.

Class of 2008, we thank you for your talents and efforts. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT TO YOU THE CLASS OF 2008.
