Joanna Schultz, a 2006 Holmen High School graduate and a sophomore at the University of Notre Dame, finished .13 of a second and two spots short of consideration for the Division 1 national meet in the 400-meter dash at last weekend's Mid-East Regional at the University of Arkansas.
Schultz finished her preliminary race in 54.18 seconds. The top five spots earned an automatic bid to nationals June 11 through 14 at Drake, with that time of 52.51 seconds posted by Mississippi's LaJada Baldwin. The sixth- through 12th-place finishers earned consideration for at-large spots to nationals, with that time of 54.05 seconds at the regional posted by McNeese State's Christi McRae.
Schultz finished with the 56th best time in the nation in the event this season with her time of 53.83 seconds from the Big East meet May 3. That time also was good for 17th among sophomores/freshmen.
In addition, Schultz was part of two 4X400 relays among the top 100 in the country this season. Neither competed at regionals, eliminating them from national contention.
Schultz earned all-Big East indoor honors in the 4X400 relay and distance relay a year ago, while earning all-Big East outdoor honors in the 4X100, 4X400 and open 400. She was among the top 15 freshmen in the country in the outdoor open 400 last spring.
Schultz is the only athlete in Wisconsin high school history to win two events in each of her four years of high school. Schultz is majoring in psychology at UND. Schultz is the daughter of Dan Platteter and Dee Dee Schultz of Holmen.
