I ask that citizens of La Crosse County consider applying for a seat on the Criminal Justice Management Council. In September 2000, the La Crosse County Board authorized the creation of the Criminal Justice Management Council to advise the County Board on correctional policies for juveniles and adults.

The CJMC is composed of 18 members. Standing members are the County Board chairman, three County Board supervisors, the presiding judge, sheriff, district attorney, representative of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections, a representative of the Wisconsin Public Defender’s Office, director of human services and a police chief from La Crosse County, along with seven citizen members.

With input from the community, the CJMC developed a philosophy that guides the future work of the criminal justice system and has the primary purpose of community safety. Core principles are prevention, justice, intervention and accountability.

With the support of the courts, the council has worked to develop the Drug Treatment Court, OWI Treatment Court, closing the Huber Center and developing a Women’s Community Based Program to enhance services for female correctional clients.

The council meets at 7:30 a.m., on the third Wednesday of the month and is finished before 9 a.m. The meetings are held in the County Administrative Center.

Interested citizens should submit a letter of application for appointment to the Criminal Justice Management Council. The application should include your name, address, phone number, why you are interested in the council and a short background statement.

We are very interested in having members from business, education and the community in general to add their expertise and perspective to the CJMC. Submit applications to the County Board Chairman, 400 N. Fourth St., La Crosse, WI 54601 by July 18.
