People who take part in this weekend’s La Crosse County Dairy Breakfast can not only get a hearty breakfast, prizes and a closeup look at farm life, they also can get vaccines and health information.
La Crosse County public health nurses will participate at the breakfast scheduled for Saturday, June 21, from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Morning Star Dairy Farm, N5931 Hwy. ZZ, Brice Prairie.
The event will include a display and handouts on oral health, blood pressure checks and the administration of tetanus, diphtheria and acellular pertussis (Tdap) vaccine to people in need of a booster. While this event and activities were planned before the recent flooding in our area, this might be a good time for persons to think about updating their immunization status.
Tdap is preferred to tetanus-diphtheria (Td) alone, for adolescents and adults who have never received Tdap, because immunity against pertussis wanes over time.
It also is important that people keep in mind that the need for a Td vaccine after exposure to flood water depends on the presence of a wound, the condition of the wound and the likelihood that the injured person is susceptible to tetanus.
Tdap will be available at no cost to people in need of the vaccine. People also are encouraged to bring a copy of their immunization record; if available.
Cost for the breakfast is $5, $3 for those age 6-12 and free for those 5 and younger.
For more information about the vaccines, call the La Crosse County Health Department at 785-9723.
