Morgan Lasack's two-run triple came as part of a nine-run third inning and allowed the Holmen Merchants 16-aud-under softball team to a split of a Coulee Region Girls Softball League doubleheader at Shelby June 25.

Buoyed by Lasack's single, the Merchants won game one 14-11. Stephanie Helmers added two hits for Holmen.

Sam Johnson earned the win, including recording three strikeouts. Shelby scored twice in the bottom of the fifth of the scheduled five-inning game to get within 14-11 and had the tying run on-deck, but Johnson recorded one of her punchouts to end the game.

Helmers had two more hits in game two, but it was far from enough, as the Merchants took their first loss of the season 11-2. Helmers also accounted for one of Holmen's two runs with a sacrifice fly, with Brittany Gooden acounting for the other with an RBI single.

Jill Utz and Johnson also had hits for the Merchants, with Utz also stealing a base, and Johnson reaching in her other plate appearance via a walk. Sam Stenson took a complete-game loss, recording two strikeouts.

“We saw a high-quality pitcher in game two,” Holmen head coach Bergen Schaller said. “We had a hard time hitting off her.”

The Merchants a doubleheader with Logan Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Holmen hosted a doubleheader with Aquinas Wednesday evening (after the Courier deadline).
