(2008/06/03) Four score and seven years ago n (pauses) n wait; this must be someone else’s speech. (Shuffles papers around.) Ah, here’s mine. Good afternoon, School Board members, Dr. Frick, Principal Ferry, faculty, teachers, counselors, families, and friends. On behalf of Holmen High School and the Class of 2008, it is my pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Commencement Ceremony (checks watch)…is it 2008 already? We are gathered here today to celebrate the achievements of over 250 seniors of Holmen High School. After over a decade of hard work and dedication to both academics and our activities, we’ve done it. We’re graduating. Yes, students, it’s that day. We know you’ve been aching to strut across the stage since first term, maybe even earlier, and it’s finally here. And yes, parents, it’s that day. Your sons and daughters are graduating. Already. No, it’s not tomorrow, it’s not next week, and it is most definitely not next year…it’s today. So please find the courage to loosen your grip, and let us out into the world. And should you shed tears in the process, let them be tears of joy, of memories, of hope.
(2008/06/03) Good afternoon everyone. Standing here I find it nearly impossible to believe that 13 years of schooling have come and passed. I am truly honored and relatively terrified to be speaking to you today. One idea was evident to me from the very beginning of planning this speech. I realized that it would be important to concentrate my speech on a topic which students feel strongly about. I could have chosen friends or family, love or honor, scholastics or athletics, but ultimately I decided on “reality television” and how it relates to us. I feel that the titles of some of these reality shows match-up with our educational experiences extremely well.
(2008/06/03) Well here we are, “Life moves pretty fast…” The daily hassles we face may at times prevent us from really grasping the important moments that make the greatest memories. We have all heard the clichés about challenges in life; “it’s an up hill battle”, “when you fall down get back up”, “there are many hurdles in life”… but the truth of the matter is that it is the challenges that make and shape us as individuals. We have been meeting them head on from the very beginning and will continue to do when we leave this chapter of our lives. But we must not become too wrapped up in the challenges of life that we miss the important moments that make the best long-lasting memories.
(2008/06/03) Today is a new start or journey for the Class of 2008.
