When longtime Onalaska resident and area basketball official Rod Ostrem was a student at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1962, his future goals in the sport were focused on playing the game. A change that will lead Ostrem to induction into the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame as an official in October.

Holmen High School's girls track and field had all sorts of opportunities to advance one of its three relay teams or three individual qualifiers to the finals of their events at last weekend's Division 1 state track and field meet at UW-La Crosse. Two of Holmen's relay teams were seeded in the top eight based on their sectional times, while Vikings head coach Paul Berge thought the remaining relay and each of the individuals had a chance to reach the finals. But just two of the six HHS entrants even finished in the top half of their fields, shutting Holmen out of sending a team to the finals in an event.

Holmen High School's baseball team looked like it cured a lot of its ills in its regular-season finale with defending Division 3 state champion Aquinas May 20, outhitting the Blugolds 11-8 and committing two fewer errors. But Holmen's lack of offense and inconsistent defense jumped back to the fore at Tuesday's Division 1 regional semifinal at Onalaska in a 6-0 loss that ended the Vikings season at 2-17.

Holmen High School's boys golf team entered last year's Division 1 regionals as a favorite to advance to sectionals, but an illness sustained by then No. 2 player Billy Pearse helped keep Holmen from advancing as a team. Holmen High School junior Sam Kube was among the most consistent players for the Vikings a year ago, at one point shooting 10 consecutive rounds in the 70s. Longtime Holmen High School girls track and field coach Paul Berge has talked all season about Logan likely being beyond his team's reach in the team chase at Tuesday's Mississippi Valley Conference meet at Logan. Holmen seemingly enters the meet with the sprinting and hurdling depth to stick with the Rangers, but likely will need strong performances in some of the field events to keep up with Logan.

It wasn't long ago that the Holmen High School boys tennis team struggled to win any matches at the Eau Claire Memorial Old Abe Sweet Sixteen Invitational. Holmen won just two matches at the event two years ago. But the Vikings won nine matches at Saturday's event and finished 11th, their best-ever showing in the event.

Holmen High School's baseball tean has shown improved play in Mississippi Valley Conference games the last two weeks. That trend continued April 30 against Central, though it came to a crashing halt Monday in a doubleheader at defending league champion Logan.

Strikers competitive with MVC contender (2008/05/15)
Holmen High School's girls soccer team played Mississippi Valley Conference contender Logan to a 1-1 tie between two halves played Monday and Tuesday. Unfortnnately for Holmen those two halves did not come in the same game. Holmen trailed 3-0 at halftime Monday on their way to a 4-1 loss, while standing tied at halftime Tuesday, before falling 3-0.
